In conversation with the BAME Ecologist Network
“My grandma lived on a council estate and she doesn’t have a garden. She has massive, massive plant pots and whenever I looked at those plant pots I was exposed to nature and ecosystems that I used to dream of being the Amazon. And for me it was my mini Amazon.”
While many people in the UK take accessing the countryside for granted there are others, notably among BAME communities living in urban settings, who face considerably more challenges gaining access to green spaces and nature.
A new collective in the UK, the BAME Ecologists Network, is on a mission to help reconnect people of colour with nature and Planted Unearthed co-founder spoke to three of the group’s founders - Reuben Fakoya Brooks, Bushra Abu-Helil and Connor Sullivan to find out more about their important work introducing young people to green, diverse natural spaces.
