Kahani: A Stone and Bamboo Pattern Book for a Regenerative Bhopal

The pattern book, designed for agile development, looks to subvert Bhopal’s prevailing housing typology. It presents a sequence of structural, environmental and spatial strategies for new live-work homes, inspired by the historic Indian 'tool-house'. Mirroring existing standardised housing dimensions, the pattern book proposes low-cost, circular, and fire-rated pre-fabricated bamboo frames slotted between socio-ecological crafted stone cores. This reduces structural embodied carbon by 71% compared to a standard concrete and brick north-Indian home. The book provides much needed assistance to architects, craftspeople and residents in Bhopal, helping make feasible the design of innovative, regenerative, bioregional and largely biogenic building systems.

Regenerative design is at the heart of the project. Socially, the pattern book looks to encourage variable live-work typologies, encouraging mixed use, dense urbanism, challenging the current North Indian norm of sprawling dormitory districts. In terms of materials and embodied carbon, the system looks to leverage the bioregional resources of quick-growing, carbon sequestering bamboo, and waste stone offcuts from local industry, reducing concrete demand. Further to this, nodal column and beam design with simply laid bamboo-lime composite floors allows adaptation, member replacement and disassembly. Exposed bamboo in the work spaces enhances biophilia, furthered by the creation of micro-habitats and ecological moments including climbing plants on facades and swift-boxes on roofs. Finally, the operational carbon footprint has been optimised through a sequence of 16 carefully designed and calculated passive and active environmental design strategies responding to the increasingly harsh climatic conditions across India, with a particular focusing on pre-treating airflows to reduce cooling loads.
