Waste made wonderful
Smile Plastics transforms waste materials - such as plastic bottles, yoghurt pots and coffee grounds – into beautiful, unique, decorative panels for the architecture and design industry. Each piece is hand crafted, which means that no two will be the same.
Their mission is to inspire and engage more people in sustainability and recycling through showcasing how waste can be used to make beautiful, unique products. They aim to shift the mindset on waste and shown that through innovation, we can unlock the hidden potential in scrap materials.
Their approach to design can take some time as they explore possibilities on a small scale before producing on mass. They experiment with colourings, textures, patters and waste streams before identifying what works. For example, the coffee materials used in their Sanremo Verde project took a number of years and was part of a much bigger coffee recycling project.
