Project name/title: Shenzhen Development, China

Client name: Taihua Real Estate (China) Co. Ltd.

Location: Shenzhen, P. R. China

Completion year: 2001

With a whole range of bio-inspired considerations this development was designed to create an ecological corridor by incorporating native species to increase its ecological value. Additionally, the high percentage of organic mass on the site lowers the ambient temperature of the development (due to water transpiration from the planting) helping to moderate the micro-climate of the site. While the central water feature makes use of a dry stream to retain and recycle the water for landscape irrigation when it rains, as a rainwater management system it also benefits biodiversity.

By considering the orientation of the scheme the tower blocks have been sited to minimise solar exposure during the hottest part of the day while sun shading devices on alternate floors also help to ensure low energy use. All apartment rooms and lift lobbies benefit from natural light and ventilation; reducing operational costs whilst enhancing internal comfort levels.
