Matthew and Celia Burt started their company in 1978 from a garden shed.
From the outset, theirs was to be an ecologically-sustainable brand, creating furniture to a superlative standard and with a focus on providing training and employment in the Wylye Valley. For the last four decades, they have been producing furniture unique in its provenance and longevity whilst keeping alive the tradition of passing on skills, ancient and modern, to their team of apprentices and master makers. No longer ensconced in the garden shed, having eventually moved to a purpose-built workshop and studio and with a showroom nearby, they remain firmly rooted in their original ethos, designing and making 21st century English furniture, in Wiltshire, from predominately English timbers.
By constantly challenging their abilities and creativity, they consolidate their position as world-class furniture makers, firmly embedded in their community and environment.
The business was founded in 1978, with sustainability at its very core, and this is how it operates to this day, with a deep and committed respect for the natural world.

Matthew is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
Our Lime Tree workshop and studio is central to the company's identity and vision. It is situated on the edge of the village of Hindon, in Wiltshire. Our small showroom is just a short walk away.
In June 2022, Matthew Burt will be launching a new initiative, ‘Making from the Collection’, and we will be offering a preview of this at Planted. Making from the Collection takes a selection of some of our most-loved, classic and timeless designs that have been made throughout our history and offers them as part of a made-to-order service.
All of our designs come from Matthew Burt, an award-winning designer holding multiple prestigious Guild Marks.
All our pieces are designed, made and sold solely from our base in Wiltshire.
