Biotope - Henning Larsen

Henning Larsen, Danish biophilic architecture pioneers, designing for and with nature to create lasting environmental and social impact

Responsive design today demands an approach that is truly life-centric, supporting ecosystems as much as people. Embracing a radically inclusive approach to designing with and for nature, Henning Larsen place nature within fabric of our societies to create lasting social and environmental impacts.

One example of this philosophy is The Biotope in Lille, - constrained by sprawling highways on either side of it, The ‘Biotope’ (derived from the Greek phrase ‘Place of Life’) considers nature throughout the space on each of its seven floors; connecting with the green belt of forests, parks, and gardens surrounding the city which run through the site. The architects consulted with local ecologists to ensure a diverse selection of native trees and plants were spread throughout the 30,000m2 building.

With its expansive network of skybridges, balconies, and rooftop gardens offering a habitat for over 65-species of plants, complete with nesting boxes, collected rainwater, and fertile substrates, The Biotope supports a biodiverse ecosystem in a bustling city centre. By prioritising space for nature, the building also acts to enhance the well-being of people; maximising natural light, air, and ecological connections.
