In conversation with Benchmark

Welcome to the seventh edition of Planted Unearthed.

We spoke to a pioneer of sustainable manufacturing who 30 years ago founded Benchmark Furniture, alongside Sir Terrence Conran, while pledging at the time never to use wood sourced from tropical rainforests.

Few people took Sean Sutcliffe seriously, but history will judge him and his business to have been light years ahead of their time.

“People only really started taking Benchmark seriously when we started making money. That’s the biggest challenge when it comes to sustainable practices.”
