Led by biophilic design expert Oliver Heath and former Sunday Times journalist Sam Peters, the Planted Unearthed 2021 talks programme brought together some of the most progressive thinkers in the world of design, sustainability, food production, architecture and nature.

Tackling some of the most challenging and important topics facing us today and building on the success of our inaugural 2020 talks programme, the talks explored how cities, buildings, people and spaces must adapt and evolve in the face of the growing challenges of climate change and a post-pandemic world

  • Oliver Heath

    Oliver Heath is an industry recognised global authority and educator in Biophilic Design, founder of an award winning architectural & interior design practice. He has over 20 years media experience working for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and other European networks.

  • Sam Peters

    Award-winning journalist and media campaigner. Shortlisted for the prestigious Cudlipp Prize at the UK Press Awards. Regular columnist for the Independent.

  • Dr. Alia Fadel

    As an Educator, Architect, Landscape Architect, Biophilic Design Consultant and Ethnographic Observation Specialist, Dr. Alia Fadel’s work has focussed on the interrelationship between design, health and contact with nature in supporting physical, psychological, and emotional wellbeing in the built environment.

  • Roddy Langmuir

    Roddy is a Practice Leader at Cullinan Studio, with a wealth of experience on projects across diverse building types and at all scales. He chairs design review panels for Architecture and Design Scotland and lectures widely on projects and practice in the UK and abroad.

  • Vanessa Champion

    Ness started her professional career as an academic at UCL with a PhD in Greek and Latin. In her 20’s she left academia to pursue careers in various industries before becoming the editorial director of a specialist London newspaper and eventually establishing her own publication The Journal of Biophilic Design.

  • Claudia Pasquero

    An architect, curator, author and educator, Claudia’s work operates at the intersection of biology, computation and design. Amongst other achievements, she is the founder and codirector of ecoLogicStudi and also Lecturer and director of the Urban Morphogenesis Lab at the Bartlett UCL.

  • Mark Tremlett

    One of the original champions of the planet in the British manufacturing industry, Mark Tremlett has made ethically produced, organic mattresses and beds for the past two decades. In 2020 Mark’s pioneering work was awarded for its outstanding achievement to sustainability in the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

  • Sean Sutcliffe

    Co-founder of Benchmark, which formed in 1984, Sean cares deeply about environmental sustainability and craftsmanship. He has been a champion of the health and well-being benefits of using solid timber furniture in both commercial and residential settings for many years.

  • James Lord

    James established the landscape design discipline at HTA and is responsible for design quality and business development across HTA’s landscape portfolio. He has received numerous national design awards for his work and, amongst other achievements, is an elected Board member and Trustee of the Landscape Institute.

  • Patrick Speck

    Patrick Speck

    Patrick joined GROCHE in 2006, holding several senior positions in the design department. In 2018, Patrick was appointed VP of Design Transformation and in 2020 was promoted into his current position, where he is responsible for the regional design leadership of LIXIL’s Design Studios both Düsseldorf and London.

  • Georgia Elliott-Smith

    An environmental engineer and Chartered Environmentalist, Georgia started her career at Bovis in 1995 as one of the first Environmental Managers in the construction industry. Now founder and MD of sustainability consultancy Element Four, Georgia helps clients such as DEFRA to deliver sustainable projects and business practices.

  • Trewin Restorick

    Trewin is Founder and CEO of Hubbub UK, which transforms the way environmental messages are communicated. In 2020, Hubbub won Charity of the Year and Trewin was recognised with a Leader of the Year award. He is an environmental advisor to a Tetra Pak, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the national Lottery Climate Fund.

  • Kerem Asfuroglu

    Founder of Dark Source, a London-based lighting design studio driven by social and environmental values, Kerem specialises in dark sky friendly lighting design for the urban and rural public realm. He has won several design awards including Red Dot, Vox Juventa, PLDC and LAMP.

  • Poppy Szkiler

    Poppy is the Founder and CEO of Quiet Mark, the global certification programme public-health campaign. Granddaughter of John Connell OBE, Poppy has continued her grandfathers passion inleading the battle against worldwide noise pollution with a ground-breaking business strategy, and driving change through creating the Buy-Quiet and Design Quiet movement.
